Candidate Filing June 1st Through 5th
Candidate filing for the 2009 primary and general elections will be open starting June 1st, for five days in Columbia and Walla Walla counties. Several positions are up for election this year, including Dayton and Starbuck City Councils, school boards in Dayton, Waitsburg, Prescott and Starbuck, and positions on hospital, port and fire district commissions. The list of open positions and current incumbents is shown at right.
Also open for filing this year is the special election for the 16th District legislative position currently held by Democrat Laura Grant-Herriot. Grant-Herriot was appointed earlier this year to replace her late father, Bill Grant. Grant-Herriot and three Republicans – Terry Nealey of Dayton, Kevin Young, of Walla Walla and Matt Watkins of Pasco – have announced their intention to file for the position.
Filing for the legislative position will be through the Secretary of State's office in Olympia. Filing for the other open positions will be at the County Auditors' offices, as shown at right.
This year's primary election will be held August 18th, and the general election will be November 3rd. According to Columbia County Auditor Sharon Richter, only races in which three or more candidates file for the same position will be included on the primary ballot. In those races, the top two vote-getters will move on to the general election. Those races with fewer than three filers will appear only on the general election ballot in November.
