Editor's Note

I'm Now a Locavore

This month's Blue Mountain News features one of my favorite subjects: Food. As we were preparing this issue, I was amazed to learn how much food I could buy that's grown right in my neighborhood. I always thought that all the food grown around here was consumed in other countries – or at least in other states.

The Walla Walla Valley Farmers Market has been discovered. It gets very crowded on Saturday and Sunday mornings starting in late spring. People know it's a great place to buy locally-grown produce and specialty foods, and they come back week after week to get more. And be sure to check out Dayton's up-and-coming farmers' market, which is hoping to open in June.

What a lot of people don't know is that just about any meat product can be purchased directly from a local producer. And it's a great value. The price per pound of beef direct from a producer is low when you factor in the quality of the top steak cuts you get. Read Tanya Patton's article on Page 13 to learn lots more about locally produced meat.

I hope you'll enjoy all the food- and non food-related articles in this month's issue. Thanks go out to everyone who helped put our special local food feature together.

Big news, folks. For the first time in history, you can now buy a latte in Starbuck. Starbuck, WA, that is. (Actually, you'll have to go down the road about six miles.)

As I was getting ready to sit down and write this little note, I received a call from Jim McArthur at Lyons Ferry Marina. He and his wife Angela have been working for the last two months to rebuild the store and restaurant at the marina. The job is now complete and they are open for business. And they have an espresso machine.

So go buy a vente triple vanilla mocha latte at Lyons Ferry and have your picture taken in front of the city limit sign. Try not to shake for the camera though.
