Dear Editor,
The citizens of Columbia County deserve congratulations for their input and contributions in making our communities a better place to live, work and play. There was an amazing turnout for a series of meetings on visioning and planning. These meetings all took place in the evening and people attending felt free to express their views and vote on those things they felt were most important to this county. All of this was arranged by the county planning department in cooperation with local citizens, organizations and a professional facilitator. The results have been used by the planning commission and county commissioners in helping make decisions that affect the future direction of our county. The Comprehensive Plan, zoning, economic development, urban expansion, and recreation were but a few of the many subjects explored in these meetings.
This effort was a common-sense approach by the citizens to address the short- and long- term problems facing the county at this time. We are at a crossroad of moving the county forward to make it an attractive place to live, work and raise our children.
Our citizens' efforts to put forth a direction for the county must now face the test of the upcoming election. We have come this far and have made significant progress with our present county leadership. We know there are some citizens who may not have agreed in the past with a few of the decisions made by our officials. Our concern, however, lies in the fact that some of the candidates have not attended any of the vision or planning meetings and have not been attending regularly scheduled county commissioners' meetings. Hundreds of hours have been put in by residents in planning a direction for our future and making comments during public hearings to our decision makers. The possibility that the results of this hard work could be erased is disheartening. Please make sure your vote preserves the future of economic diversity in our county.
Sincerely,
