Signs of Spring By Ken Graham The winter has been long, cold and snowy, but it's over now – at least officially. Spring in our area is a wonderful time of year: the birds are singing and the trees are turning green. People are working in their yards again. At my house, we've already put the screens back on the windows and the barbeque back on the deck. All of this got me to thinking about some of the other things that are happening around here that let us all know that spring has arrived. I came up with a list: [Editor's note: Ken watches New York local stations on the satellite TV at his house, so the David Letterman show comes on before his bedtime (barely). He's obviously been watching a little too much.] Top Ten Signs that Spring has Arrived in The Touchet Valley: 10. The snow's no longer sticking. 9. The Dayton City Council is considering a proposal to put wind turbines on Main Street. 8. When I put the top down on the Saab, only about half the people I see look at me like I'm an idiot. 7. The farmers have stopped complaining about the snow and started complaining about the rain. 6. There's a new winery opening in Walla Walla every day, instead of just every other day. 5. They just held another election in Waitsburg. 4. Now when you want to see a demolition derby you go to the fairgrounds instead of the Bluewood highway. 3. Tourists in Starbuck have stopped mistakenly asking for mochaccinos and started mistakenly asking for frappuccinos. 2. The white stuff floating through the air is making me sneeze. 1. We've all stopped worrying about floods and started worrying about fires. Have a great Spring!
