"Dayton on Tour"
A new arts and history event arrives October 13 and 14 by Ken Graham For a weekend this fall, beauty and creativity will be on full display in Dayton. A new event, called Dayton on Tour, is coming October 13 and 14, bringing local art, films, history and music together for two days. The centerpiece of the weekend will be a reception in the courtyard of the Dayton Historic Depot from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, to introduce more than 20 local artists whose work will be on display there. Three experimental filmmakers from Whitman College will also be there to discuss their work, which will be shown early Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Theater. Mike McQuary and Bob Kalamasz (a.k.a Mike and Bobby K.) will perform music during the reception. Hors d'oeuvres will be served, and beer and wine will be available. Saturday Art Walk The Visit-the-Artists Reception will be the culmination of the Saturday Art Walk which begins at 11:00 a.m. The Wenaha Gallery, Jill Ingram Watercolors and Keith McMasters' Studio will display their outstanding artwork, with the artists on hand to discuss it. At the Dayton Historic Depot, an art show featuring more than 20 local artists will open for the Art Walk. The route leading to the four venues will be well marked. Saturday Evening Music
On Saturday night from 7 to 9 p.m., the Tri-Cities
based Celtic band "Skweez the Weezle" will perform
at Skye Book and Brew, at 148 E. Main St. The band
features traditional and original tunes and songs
from Highland and Lowland Scotland, Ireland, Cape
Breton Island, Wales, and the USA. Art Show at the Depot • What: Artwork by more than 20 local area artists will be available for viewing and sale This fall, the Dayton Depot will host a benefit art show featuring more than 20 local artists. Art works, including paintings, photography, jewelry, weavings, pottery and sculpture, will hang both upstairs and in the main downstairs room of the Depot. The show will be the centerpiece of the Saturday Art Walk and Reception on October 13. The Depot show will run for approximately six weeks, ending after Christmas Kickoff, on Thanksgiving Weekend. All of the artwork in the show will be for sale. A percentage of each sale will go to the Historic Depot for its operating budget. The following artists will be included in the show:
Martha Anderson – Acrylics Whitman College Independent Films • What: Three independent films produced by
Whitman College Film Studies class Dr. Robert Sickles and two of his students from his Film Studies class at Whitman College will each present a short documentary film they have produced. According to Dr. Sickles, each film depicts an interesting and unique subject relating to the Walla Walla area.
After the showings, the filmmakers will
conduct question-and-answer sessions with the
audience. The filmmakers will also be available
to visit with local residents at the Artists'
Reception at the Depot, from 4 to 6 p.m. Dayton Historic Home Tours • What: Tour of five historic Dayton homes plus the Dayton Memorial Library This year's edition of Dayton's Historic Home Tours includes four private homes, one public home and one public library. The Dayton Memorial Library is celebrating its 70th anniversary this fall and its original Art Deco building will be on display during the tour. The 2007 tour also includes two classic Queen Anne Victorian homes, one with a complete interior renovation done in the last year, the other with a kitchen that has many original components and was recently decorated to enhance these features. An Arts and Crafts cottage on Syndicate Hill has been completely redecorated and landscaped to reflect the charm of that period. A new private residence on the second floor of the historic Dantzscher Building (also known as the Dorsey Building, located on Main Street) has been completely renovated with a working elevator, fine wallpapers and vintage furnishings. Also featured this year will be the Boldman House Museum, showcasing the main floor now completely renovated, and the garden brimming with heirloom plant species. On display in the Boldman House will be items presented for evaluation at the Antiques Roadshow held in Spokane this past August. Because these items were not presented by private owners, they couldn't be featured on the television show, but much valuable information was obtained which will be shown on the tour. Also at the Boldman house will be a self-guided tour of the beautiful gardens surrounding the home. The cost is $10 per person, including the tour guidebook. Cash, check, Visa, or MasterCard are accepted. From the Depot you set your own direction and pace as homeowners and volunteers welcome you at each place. Both the Depot and the Library will be serving complimentary refreshments during Tour hours. The Dayton Historic Home Tours are an annual fund-raising event for the Dayton Historic Depot, with proceeds going toward daily operating costs and activities. Call the Depot at 509-382-2026 for advance tickets or for more information. Copyright (c) 2007, Blue Mountain News |
